When Want Something More For Your Child Than They Do...

On the way home from Ponca City last night, my daughter’s basketball team had experienced their first loss of the season.  Of course you would of thought it was the worst possible thing that could have happened.  I told my wife that we were going to encourage her after the game even though her play gave us no reason to be encouraged.  No talking about the game, we were going to go eat at Long John Silver’s and head home.  Well I got outvoted so we ate at Freddy’s, and that alone should have been the first sign for me that trouble lay ahead.  As we got in the car to the leave the gym a cloud of disappointment hung in the air, and of course what I didn’t want to happen, happened.  The game was replayed and her mother and I proceeded to tell her what she needed to do to get better.  Later that night I reflected on my day and thought wow this could be a perfect blog post.  Have you ever wanted it more than your child?  I got to thinking I’m not really sure if my daughter was disappointed in her play or upset that she had disappointed her parents.  So I resolved to do these three things at her ballgames:

  1. Get a box of popcorn.  If I’m eating popcorn it makes me resist the temptation to yell.  There was no popcorn at the concession stand last night that I could purchase.

  2. After the game instead of telling her what I think she could do better, I need to ask what her thoughts are for improvement.  Maybe she knows maybe she doesn’t, but until she decides it's important to take action on her thoughts and I just want it more than her.

  3. Chill Out!  Radio broadcaster Paul Harvey once said  “You can tell you're on the road to success; it's uphill all the way.”  Life is full of peaks and valley’s...she’ll be able to handle it, I just need to give her a chance to.
